VILLAGE TOURS

The Outpost represents a partnership with the Makuleke people. The development of the lodge is inextricably linked to the history of the Makuleke people, their forced removal from the region under the apartheid laws of the old South African government, and the subsequent return of their title ownership. Their history is best explored by leaving your tour to the Makuleke Village in the expert and capable hands of a Makuleke guide. You will take a leisurely stroll through the village chatting to the community members. These conversations will give insight as to how the Makuleke was won back and again surrendered to nature for the sake of preserving its wildlife and bio diversity for future generations. Pre-booking is required, subject to availability.

HISTORY TOUR

Thulamela Ruin& Crooks Corner. This region’s rich historical and cultural heritage can be explored through guided visits to Crooks Corner and the Thulamela archaeological site overlooking the Luvuvhu River.

THULAMELA RUINS

More than 600 years ago, a peaceful tribe lived on a hill near the Luvuvhu bridge. The walled city of Thulamela is thought to be an extension of the Great Zimbabwe culture. Although its existence has been known for decades, it was only in 1993 that the Gold Fields Foundation and the Kruger National Park formed a joint venture to explore and develop the site for educational purposes. Archaeologist Sidney Miller was commissioned to head the team of five workers who spent the next 18 months painstakingly reconstructing the fallen walls of Thulamela. Originally, stone walls were built to indicate the pristine status of the royal family, demarcate living areas and provide privacy. The vast area covered by Thulamela’s walling is evidence that the city housed approximately 2 000 people. Excavation of the middens produced gold jewelry iron-age implements, ceramic pots herds, glass beads, spinning wheels, sewing needles, and even a piece of Chinese porcelain. The presence of these items confirmed the hypothesis that gold, iron and other metals were smelted at Thulamela by a technologically sophisticated community, who had trade links with the Far East. A morning tour through these ruins will leave you enthralled.

CROOK’S CORNER

Crooks Corner, a settlement at the convergence of 3 southern African countries (South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe) became a haven for the criminally inclined who wished to avoid the enforcers of law and order. When they got into trouble in any (or all) of the 3 countries, they would naturally gravitate to Crook’s Corner. It is a bushy wedge of wilderness where crocodiles sun themselves on the sandy riverbanks, dreaming their evil dreams, or pop up silently from submersion, a stark reminder to the unwary of the dangers of illegal border crossings. Pre-booking is required, subject to availability.
