There are just six secluded luxury suites, built of thatch and teak and slightly elevated on stilts. Each suite features a lounge area, opulent bedroom with king-size bed beautifully draped in mosquito netting, as well as a dressing room and en-suite bathroom. The latter boasts a deep tub, twin basins and shower and modern amenities.

The private deck with its splash pool overlooks a grassy meadow where guests can observe herds of grazing antelope and zebra, as well as a variety of birdlife. West-African inspired fabrics and rich furnishings, combined with a sophisticated mix of curated antiques and collectibles, lend the suite its distinct luxurious feel.

Apart from private traversing rights, the lodge’s open safari vehicles can also traverse the main roads in the park without restrictions, thereby allowing unlimited game viewing opportunities in one of the world's most famous reserves.

Gourmet dishes, with a distinct Pan African flavor are served in a variety of locations, From the formal dining area under beautiful hand-wrought chandeliers, to the deck with its beautiful views of the mountains, dining at Phinda Rock Lodge is a culinary feast. The more adventurous can opt for a bush dinner served in a bush clearing under the African sky. The more romantically inclined can request an intimate dinner in the privacy of their suit. The scrumptious menus will appeal to all palates and dishes are perfectly paired with fine vintages from the cellar. The kitchen caters to a wide variety of dietary preferences.

GAME DRIVES

Knowledgeable field guides and trackers will accompany guests in open safari vehicles on early morning and late- afternoon game drives into the wilderness. With thousands of hectares traversing wilderness, not one drive is ever the same. The guides will share their knowledge about the wildlife and the various habitats in an informative way, leaving you with a renewed appreciation of Mother Nature and her treasures. They will also do their utmost to ensure that your specific interests and preferences are met.

BUSHWALKS

For the more adventurous, early morning bushwalks offer the exhilarating experience of tracking animals on foot. Here you can immerse yourself in the rhythms of nature, and utilize all your senses as your guide reveals the intricacies of the African bush, its creatures, medicinal plants, hidden treasures and more.  

BIRDWATCHING

With more than 400 recorded bird species, Phinda affords avid birders with the unique opportunity to view most of their favorite species. Expect to see the Neergard’s sun bird and pink-throuted twinspot which is endemic to the Zululand region, as well as the lemon-breasted canary, southern banded snake eagle and grey wax bill which prefer the coastal plains, to name but a few. Not forgetting the African broadbill and square-tailed drongo of the sand forests, of course.  

ZULULAND BEACH ADVENTURE

The vast sandy beaches of the Zululand coastline provide a beautiful setting for a half-day beach outing. Soak up the sun, splash in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, relax with a good book, play beach games, take leisurely walks along the shoreline or snorkel at Jesser Point, a protected marine reserve.  

TURTLE NESTING ADVENTURE

This is a seasonal activity. For four months during the southern hemisphere summer, the enormous leatherback and loggerhead turtles emerge from the Indian Ocean at Sodwana Bay to lay their precious eggs in the sand. Driving along the moonlit deserted coastline in search of fresh turtle tracks and nesting sites, is a thrilling experience. Watching the female turtles digging a nest and laying their eggs will leave you in awe of these unique creatures.  

RHINO NOTCHING

Guests can a assist in the conservation of the highly endangered black and white rhino by accompanying rangers in open safari vehicles, in search of rhinos to dart and capture. Once darted, the veterinary team will notch the animal’s ear for research purposes, and insert a microchip in its horn so that it could easily be identified. It affords a unique insight into all the measures involved in securing the survival of this iconic species and is a once-in-a lifetime experience. To qualify for this excursion, guests will need to spend a minimum of three nights at Phinda.  

ZULU VILLAGE TOUR

Take an excursion into the vibrant Zulu culture by visiting a traditional Zulu village where you will get an insight into this ancient African culture by visiting the training school of a local sangoma (traditional healer), and watching expert crafters creating authentic pieces of artwork. You will experience some of the daily rituals and share in some Zulu folklore.  

TRACKING ADVENTURE

Accompany an expert ranger and tracker to find the rare and endangered black rhino on foot. They will teach you the finer intricacies of how to follow rhino tracks and read scratching posts in order to trace these magnificent creatures. All your senses will be on high alert! Remember a pair of comfy walking shoes.  

PRIVATE SAFARI

A private safari allows you to explore the wilderness in the company of your own dedicated tracker and ranger, in your own exclusive safari vehicle. This exercise affords guests the opportunity to plan their own safari experience. A picnic can also be enjoyed en-route.  

PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI

A fully-equipped photographic safari vehicle is available to passionate photographers, both novice and advanced. The vehicle boasts state-of-the-art camera mounds and caters for a maximum of four guests. You will be accompanied by a knowledgeable guide on the topic, who will go to great lengths to afford you the opportunity to capture that perfect shot.  

INDIAN OCEAN SAFARI

The abundance of marine life at the iconic Sodwana Bay on the northern coast of South Africa offers a stellar opportunity to explore the wide diversity of ocean species by scuba diving or snorkeling in the coral reefs, home to more than 1 200 fascinating fish species. This exciting adventure, aboard an inflatable vessel and in the company of a certified dive master, offers the prospect of encountering and swimming with wild dolphins, snorkeling amidst flourishing reefs and the chance to view humpback and southern right whales (seasonal). A scuba-diving refresher course is compulsory for fully certified divers who have not participated in diving for 6 months or more. (Cost per person.)  

A NIGHT UNDER THE STARS

Spending a night in a beautiful clearing in the bush, is a thrilling way in which to experience the wonders of nature and the universe. You will arrive at sunset to spend the night in comfortable beds with warm duvets, and draped in mosquito netting. Sitting around the campfire whilst enjoying a hearty meal and listening to the sounds of the wilderness under the vast expanse of African sky, is a memory that will last a lifetime. An armed guard will keep you safe throughout the night.
